Bad news for Otaki

This week Otaki learnt that the school attached to the Otaki Health Camp was to close. The school had a mere 4 weeks to 'consult'.

Is it the schools job to get feedback for the Minister of Education to her proposals or is it her job to reasonably assess the function, value and need of the school.

The  school is a critical part of the health camp. Without one the other will fail. The Minister suggests alternative providers. Who and where is uncertain.

today I am grumpy...

When we woke up this morning it was to a phone call to say our fence had been tagged. 'Pakeha bastartd steal Maori land' is what is sprayed on my fence. I don't think I deserve this or that it is a reasonable accusation. But does the fact that I live across the road from Rangiatea Chruch mean I should take it personally? More tagging along the road. This time it says 'kill John Keys'. I know there is no 's' on the end of John Key's name but nevertheless an exhortation to kill him seems a bit extreme.

 

Justice Finally............

After a lenghtly wait for justice to be done, my friend Darren Hughes has been cleared. I am mindful of two old adages in regards to this affair:

1 Who benefits from the leak

2. Justice delayed is justice denied.

I am pondering these two as I consider how to continue to support Darren back into a life of politics when he so loves and when he excells at.

Banning visitors

I have been forced to do something I never considered I would do. That is ban certain sites from using the 'Contact me" part of this web site. That facility is still available but I have now banned the multiple incursions by drug companies to incite me to use viagra, anti-depressants, lose weight (How do they know?) and the like. Sometimes I had more that 6 requests a night and more during the day. I became tired of waking up to the joys of Viagra!  So enough. You are now no longer welcome to contact me all you drug companies and scammers.

 

Otaki Community Board Success

Last night (Thursday 5th May 2011) the Otaki Community Board won the UNICEF Child /Youth Friendly Community Award at the Annual Community Board Conference. That is great news for a small community, fortunate enough to have a board working for it and with it.

And that's not all. Penny Gaylor who was a Board member and is now a councillor won  the Leadership Award.

Well done all.

A Rainy ANZAC Day

A rainy day in Otaki today to contemplate one's parents lives during the war. How did they survive such horror?

I have  mixed views on the increasing popularity of ANZAC Day.

I wonder if it is a celebration of war? I have a great distaste for that.

Is it rememberance of men and women lost? That is great. I do remember my parents on this day. My father in the NZ Army on active service in the Middle East, Greece and Crete. And my mother as a nursing sister with the RAF in the Middle East.

editing the editor's edits!

Have just finished 10 weeks of editing the editor's edits for my book 'Women in my Rose Garden' It finally seems to be happening after a slow beginning. Look for it in 12months time ready for the English spring. It is to be published in English, French, German and Swedisgh and hopes are high for Spanish!

How good is that.

The Bloodhounds

So the bloodhounds in the media have anopther scalp! Shame on them. Prosecutor, judge and jury.

The media frenzy about local MP Darren Hughes is irresponsible. What has happened to the concept of innocence until proven guilty.

Why arn't these intrepid journos asking the following questions:

Why was it leaked now? Just weeks away from a slash and burn budget!

Who benefits from this exposure?

What was this adult man thinking of when he went out drinking and then returned to Darren's home?

Earthquakes

The dreadful sights in Christmas make the problems here in Kapiti pale into insignificance. The sights of homes, building, roads destroyed is heartbreaking. But the problems of falling masonry is nothing to the deaths of so many people and the heartbreak of not knowing how you loved ones are faring. The staff at the hospital, evacuating the patients and then continung working on damaged people without knowing the fate of their own families and friends is truely professional.
