The sad news from England overnight was the announcement of the death of rosarian Peter Beales. He was 76
He started growing rose in 1968, won 19 Gold medals at Chelsea, and was awarded the Victoria Medal of Honours in 2003, awarded by the Royal Horticultural Society.
He was a noted rose grower, nurseryman and author and his book 'Classic Roses' is one I would never be without. We are now onto our second copy and it is a battered well used tome. Our first one fell to pieces. It is a must have for any fledgling rosarian.
He is credited with saving the rose 'Edith Cavel from extinction and introducing the rose world to many roses in particular Tipsy's Imperial Concubine and Corylus.
He spent an enjoyable day with us at Trinity Farm when he toured NZ some years ago and charmed us with his wisdom, thoughfulness and niceness. On seeing one of Ken Nobbs roses - Harriet Shepherd - he commented that it deserves to be more widely known.
